Six

Malvern Theatres

*****

History’s about to get overthrown at Malvern Theatres this week as Six struts the boards with an abundance of attitude fit for a queen, so try not to lose your head as King Henry VIII’s six wives' battle for the winning tragic slot on who has the most scandalous and depressing past?

Which of the wives will be your favourite or most wronged?

Is it worse to be divorced, beheaded, died or just the one who survived?

The Tony Award winning musical (best original score, best costume design in a musical), written by Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow, first premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017 and has since gathered a huge entourage of fans.

I was lucky to catch its earlier run at Birmingham Hippodrome about five years ago and was blown away at the catchy soundtrack and snazzy costumes and it’s great to see the show going from strength to strength, if anything it’s just got slicker and the talented vocalists and live band bring the power to Tudor testimony, however far-fetched the narrative.

Let’s give a royal wave to all the queens, starting with Catherine of Aragon, Lasasha Aldredge, there’s just no way she stood a chance with Henry’s betrayals, then next up Anne Boleyn, Yna Montarde, who loses her head despite her rebellious red lipstick, moving on to Jane Seymour, Emily Dawson, who produced an heir to the throne only to die with a heart of stone.

Then came Anne of Cleves, Jodie Knight, with her Vorsprung durch Technik metamorphosing into a UV disco, Katherine Howard, Sammy Timbers, a victim of manipulation and last, but not least, survivor Catherine Parr, Layla Chivandire.

The finale is all about reclaiming the queens and their stories turning heartbreak and ruin into a celebration of 21st Century girl power joining together the wives with a shared connection and smashing the glass ceiling of historical stereotypes. “I’m the queen of the castle, get down, you dirty rascal.” Wear your crowns with pride.

Stand up for the gyrating glitterati and give it some sass with Six the Musical at Malvern Theatres until Saturday November 22nd. Tickets are available from the box office on 01684 892277 or check out the website HERE.
